Dear Unity,

Our nation’s Attorney General is key to protecting civil and voting rights. But the past positions of Trump’s Attorney General nominee, Senator Jeff Sessions, raise significant concerns about his ability to protect these rights.

For example, Sessions has said gutting the Voting Rights Act was ‘good news.’

Good news? This is not the kind of leader that should be heading the Civil Rights Division.

Voter suppression was a major problem in this past election, especially in places like North Carolina with long, ugly histories of disenfranchising African American voters. As the marchers and activists who risked their lives fighting for the vote recognized, it is impossible to get real equality without equal political representation. That's why we have the Voting Rights Act, and why overwhelming bipartisan majorities reauthorized it for decades.

Instead of turning a blind eye to this fundamental issue and calling the license to once again suppress the vote ‘good news,’ our next Attorney General should be working to restore the Voting Rights Act. We must stop this assault on our “We the People” democracy. Every person deserves their say at the ballot box.

All my best,

Jeff
