Dear Unity,

As civil rights icon Coretta Scott King said regarding Jeff Sessions’ district court nomination back in 1986, “It has been a long uphill struggle to keep alive the vital legislation that protects the most fundamental right to vote. A person who has exhibited hostility to the enforcement of these laws and thus to the exercise of those rights by black people should not be elevated to the federal bench.”

She continues, “I do not believe Jeff Sessions possesses the requisite judgement, competence and sensitivity to the rights guaranteed by the federal civil rights laws to qualify for appointment to the district court” … nor the highest law enforcement office in the land.

As shown by Mrs. King’s letter and his past record, Sessions as Attorney General would pose a major threat to civil rights and voting rights.

That is why I joined my colleagues to hold the floor all night in opposition to Jeff Sessions for Attorney General. After Senator McConnell censured Elizabeth Warren for reading Coretta Scott King’s letter, I rose to defend my colleague and continued reading the same letter. These words must not be silenced. My Senate colleagues and the American people deserve a full debate about Jeff Sessions and what his track record stands for.

WATCH as I read Coretta Scott King’s letter on the Senate floor:

There is nothing more worthy of staying up all night for than the American vision of liberty and justice for all.

With Jeff Sessions, our nation would be on track to retreat to a vision of liberty and justice only for some. Jeff Sessions has said gutting the Voting Rights Act was “good news for the South,” and has opposed giving LGBTQ Americans equal protections under the law, even when it comes to violent hate crimes.

Especially given President Trump’s Executive Orders targeting immigrant and Muslim-American communities in just his first week, now more than ever we need an Attorney General who will act as an independent check on the President, not enable the President’s worst and most discriminatory impulses.
The Attorney General is not the President’s lawyer - he is the people’s lawyer. The people deserve representation at the Department of Justice that will give them confidence our nation continues to pursue liberty and justice for all. Senator Sessions has not proven himself to be that man. For these reasons, I voted no on his nomination.

All my best,
Jeff
