Grassley Direct

I spoke with Dan & Dan on WOC radio in Davenport about the slow confirmations of the President's cabinet, the confirmation process for Supreme Court nominee Judge Neil Gorsuch, immigration enforcement, my tweets about the importance of transparency and the President's executive order on immigration.

Q&A: Supreme Court Nomination

Q. What is the status of filling the vacancy on the U.S. Supreme Court?
Q. When will the congressional nomination hearings begin?

Quick Links

I wrote a letter urging the new Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services to fast track the importation of prescription drugs from Canada as a remedy to the recent and drastic increase in drug prices in the United States.

I met with Peter Navarro, a top trade advisor for President Trump, and several of my fellow Finance Committee members to discuss the administration's trade priorities. I pointed out that U.S. agriculture is often the first target when countries retaliate against the United States on trade, making tough times even tougher for Iowa farmers and ag workers. If the President can negotiate better trade deals, I'm all for it, but I don't want to see anything that hurts major sectors of the economy, like agriculture.

Media reports this week raised questions about the resignation of National Security Advisor Mike Flynn, his conversations with the Russian Ambassador and leaks from the intelligence community. As Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, I sent a with Ranking Member Feinstein requesting a briefing and transcripts relating to Mr. Flynn's conversations.

The U.S. Senate approved a measure this week to roll back a misguided regulation that would jeopardize the Second Amendment rights of Social Security beneficiaries. The bipartisan measure, which I authored, was supported by 32 bipartisan cosponsors in the Senate and more than 20 disability and civil rights groups.

Transparency leads to accountability, and the office that handles benefits claims of fallen public safety officers could use more of both. An Iowan waited more than three years for benefits before testifying at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing that I convened. Two days later his claim was answered, showing that a little transparency can go a long way. I’ve authored bipartisan legislation to shed light on the Public Safety Officers’ Benefits program and hold the office accountable for its handling of claims.
