The Durbin Report: A message from Senator Richard J. Durbin <outreach.senate.gov/iqextranet/Customers/SenDurbin/Website_head er_3.png> Fellow Illinoisan, Tuesday night, President Trump addressed a Joint Session of Congress to lay out his plan for America. I was honored to bring Aaima Sayed, a DREAMer and student at the Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University Chicago, as my guest to the President's address. I hope her presence reminded President Trump what's at stake in the debate over DACA: the lives of more than 750,000 innocent young people and the wellbeing of entire communities. <outreach.senate.gov/iqextranet/iqClickTrk.aspx rop=15344.12143943.9010697.7246002&report_id=&redirect=https%3a%2f%2fwww facebook.com%2fSenatorDurbin%2fvideos%2f1271389762896694%2f&redir_log=1 29113649945393> Click here to watch me speak with my guest to President Trump's address to a Joint Session of Congress. <outreach.senate.gov/iqextranet/iqClickTrk.aspx rop=15344.12143943.9010697.7246002&report_id=&redirect=https%3a%2f%2fwww facebook.com%2fSenatorDurbin%2fvideos%2f1271389762896694%2f&redir_log=1 29113649945393> President Trump continued to make big promises but didn't offer any real plans to achieve them. He has yet to propose a concrete strategy to create jobs in America. We have had historic job growth over the past eight years. The policies he has put forward have already had serious human costsdividing families and threatening to cripple America's workforce by designating millions as priorities for deportation. His ban on refugees and immigrants from Muslim-majority countries plays right into the hands of our enemies and makes America less safe. The President's crusade to repeal health care would result in tens of millions of people losing their current health plans, threaten the future of Illinois hospitals, drive up costs for consumers, plunge markets into chaos, and blow a massive hole in the deficitan idea that loses more and more public support by the day. He again pointed out the terrible gun violence in the city of Chicago without offering a single solution to help stop it. Fellow Illinoisan,

Tuesday night, President Trump addressed a Joint Session of Congress to lay out his plan for America. I was honored to bring Aaima Sayed, a DREAMer and student at the Stritch School of Medicine at Loyola University Chicago, as my guest to the President’s address. I hope her presence reminded President Trump what’s at stake in the debate over DACA: the lives of more than 750,000 innocent young people and the wellbeing of entire communities.

Click here to watch me speak with my guest to President Trump’s address to a Joint Session of Congress.

President Trump continued to make big promises but didn’t offer any real plans to achieve them. He has yet to propose a concrete strategy to create jobs in America. We have had historic job growth over the past eight years. Now the responsibility has fallen on President Trump to maintain and improve it.

The policies he has put forward have already had serious human costs—dividing families and threatening to cripple America’s workforce by designating millions as priorities for deportation. His ban on refugees and immigrants from Muslim-majority countries plays right into the hands of our enemies and makes America less safe. The President’s crusade to repeal health care would result in tens of millions of people losing their current health plans, threaten the future of Illinois hospitals, drive up costs for consumers, plunge markets into chaos, and blow a massive hole in the deficit—an idea that loses more and more public support by the day.

He again pointed out the terrible gun violence in the city of Chicago without offering a single solution to help stop it. And he made no mention of Russia’s acts of cyberwar against our democracy during the last presidential campaign—that is telling as the evidence mounts and the need for an independent investigation grows more urgent.

President Trump’s priorities are out of line with the working families he claims to support—I will continue to work every day to ensure their voices are heard.

Sincerely,

Dick Durbin
United States Senator
