Sisters and Brothers,
Let me be blunt. What happened last night in Kansas is proof that voters across the spectrum are fighting back. No Democratic candidate has come as close as James Thompson did. Just five months ago Trump won this district by 27 points; last night Thompson ended up within seven. It is clear that a progressive message is powerful and it is important to build on this success. With an unabashedly and authentically progressive candidate we can succeed in red, purple and blue states.
Despite a large GOTV operation run in support, we missed a huge opportunity to help more in Kansas. A lot of people pitched in financially for James Thompson, but the forces of reaction invested more. There is so much more that Our Revolution does than just raise money for candidates, but the truth is no candidate can win without the resources she or he needs to communicate to voters. Encouraging great candidates to run and then not helping them with the resources they need hurts our movement.
I get it. You are asked by many, many groups and candidates for support. And in our political environment there is no shortage of real crises vying for your attention. But if our political revolution is to succeed, we need to show that we will help candidates that are running to continue what Bernie started. Rob Quist is one of those candidates. We know that progressive candidates can succeed where establishment Democrats have failed so many times before, and where frankly the establishment has surrendered millions of working families to far right Republican rule.
I need your help to demonstrate that the political revolution is still a force that the establishment should reckon with. Will you split a $5 contribution between Our Revolution and Rob Quist's campaign?
While Montana's special election began with a presidential appointment, Rob's grassroots campaign had its beginning well beforehand. When Bernie Sanders called for a Medicare for All system during the 2016 presidential primaries, Rob started organizing in his own community to bring this right to his fellow Montanans.
Running for Congress in Montana's at-large congressional district, his campaign is building momentum all across Big Sky Country with unwavering support for health care as a human right. It's clear that Medicare for All is a winning issue with voters of all parties, and that's got Republicans, and special interests who will fight Medicare for All, worried.
Rob's campaign for Congress is special for another reason. In a state that went for Donald Trump by more than 20 points, a Democratic challenger with support from the grassroots is poised to win back a seat in Congress in a nominally “conservative” state. It turns out that when you get down to the issues, progressives do pretty well. We saw this in Kansas, and we will see this in Montana.
I know you have been generous in the past and honestly this will not be the last time I ask you to support a progressive champion this year. But we have come so far in changing politics in America that we cannot let up now. I want to let you know that I will be sending a personal donation to help Rob Quist win. Together we can create the America we all know is possible. As Bernie said in the final email of his campaign: “Forever committed, forever fighting, forever forward!”
