Grassley Direct

I spoke with Darin Svenson of KDEC Radio and Rick Patrie of Eldora Newspapers about insurance companies pulling out of Iowa health care exchanges and future changes to Obamacare, President Trump’s actions with respect to North Korea and Syria, Americans working as agents of foreign governments, Governor Branstad’s expected timeline for confirmation and President Trump’s first 100 days.

Q&A: Pentagon's Books

Q. Why do you keep bookkeepers at the Pentagon on a short leash?
Q. Why is it critical for the Pentagon to achieve compliance with federal bookkeeping laws?

Quick Links

I re-introduced two bipartisan bills alongside my colleague, Senator Al Franken of Minnesota, that would give students and families better information about the costs of college. The two bills are the Net Price Calculator Improvement Act and the True Cost of College Act. Students and families are flying blind when making one of the most expensive commitments in their lives. Our legislation would help take the mystery out of college costs for students and families and help them avoid sticker shock and insurmountable debt.

We ought to know when people or organizations are trying to influence U.S. policies on behalf of a foreign government.  Unfortunately, the Justice Department has a poor track record of enforcing a law requiring such disclosure by foreign agents. This week, only after public pressure, more foreign agents came forward to comply with the law. I recently called on the Justice Department to do more to proactively document these lobbyists for foreign governments.

Senator Ernst and I recommended five Iowans to serve as U.S. Attorneys in the Northern and Southern districts of Iowa to President Trump. U.S. Attorneys are the chief federal law enforcement officer in their jurisdictions. They are nominated by the President and confirmed by the Senate. The five individuals we recommended have distinguished themselves with their legal education, professional experience and demonstrated leadership.

Last year, Congress passed my bipartisan law to clarify how whistleblowers at the FBI can disclose problems without fear of reprisal and bring its whistleblower protections in line with other federal agencies.  However, several months after the law took effect, the FBI has yet to update its policies or training for its employees. I called on the FBI to make these changes and ensure that employees are made aware of their new rights as whistleblowers.
