Delivering for rural Oregon

Jeff joined the Appropriations Committee so that Oregon would have a strong voice in decisions about the investments our nation should be making -- and Jeff fought hard to make sure rural Oregon wouldn't be left behind. As a result, the final bill rejects Trump's devastating proposed cuts to rural America, and invests in critical programs like helping farmers and irrigators to conserve water in Central Oregon, robust funding for wildfire suppression, keeping airports in Pendleton and other small cities open, and boosting our small ports. As Ranking Member of the Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittee, Jeff won’t stop staunchly advocating for rural Oregon.

Fueling a clean technology revolution

A clean technology revolution is underway, with 26 U.S. cities, 88 leading companies and 48 countries committing to 100 percent clean electricity. Americans are starting to see benefits as renewable energy job growth massively outpaces the rest of the U.S. economy. For the first time in history, clean energy technologies like wind turbines, solar panels, and lithium ion batteries are as cheap or cheaper than fossil fuels. America already has the affordable technology to make this transition. All that’s left is the political will to get there.

That is why Jeff is leading the charge to make this transition on the national level, with the 100 by '50 Act. The science is clear: To save the planet and economy, the nation needs bold action to rapidly transition from a fossil fuel economy to a clean and renewable energy economy. The 100 by '50 Act is exactly the roadmap we need.

Moving our nation forward on LGBTQ Equality

Even today, in 2017, LGBTQ discrimination is not explicitly prohibited in 30 states. For far too long, LGBTQ Americans have been thrown out of their rental housing or denied entry to a movie theatre because of their LGBTQ status. This is just plain wrong. Every person deserves to live free from fear of discrimination, regardless of who they are or whom they love.

That is why Jeff introduced the Equality Act this week, historic legislation to outlaw discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity in employment, housing, public accommodations, and other areas of law where discrimination is already prohibited for other protected classes. Jeff was proud to pass these strong protections in Oregon, and is now working to take them to the national level. He won’t stop pushing until non-discrimination is the law of the land in America.

Urging colleagues to support rural air service in Eastern Oregon

The Essential Air Service program for years has ensured vital rural air links such as commercial flights in and out of Pendleton’s Eastern Oregon Regional Airport -- the only commercial air service in Eastern Oregon. Regular air service in and out of remote communities allows access to vital medical services; increases economic opportunity; and attracts new visitors and new businesses. Yet the president, in his budget, proposed eliminating this lifeline for 170 small communities nationwide.

In response, Jeff leapt into action and joined 20 fellow Senators to urge continued support for the Essential Air Service Program. Communities like Pendleton rely on the Essential Air Service program to sustain their local economies. Any reduction in their air service would likely hurt these otherwise isolated areas. This week, that work paid off when congressional leaders announced that the Essential Air Service Program will continue to be supported in the new government funding bill. Jeff won’t stop working to protect these vital links.

Reaching across the aisle to support coastal communities

The Sea Grant program is a textbook example of a smart and targeted investment in local communities that helps create economic growth.
