Earlier today former FBI director James Comey gave bombshell public testimony in front of the Senate Intelligence Committee. In his testimony, Comey confirmed that the president repeatedly engaged in shocking behavior.
He also revealed that in addition to the reasons Attorney General Jeff Sessions already gave for recusing himself from the Russia investigation, the FBI is aware of additional "facts" that made the recusal necessary. Comey made it clear that he would not share these in an open session -- underscoring that there is much we don't know about Sessions' involvement with Russia. And Comey agreed that there are serious questions about the propriety of Sessions' involvement in his firing, since we now know that the firing was because of the Russia investigation and Sessions was supposed to have recused himself from that. Recusal is not sufficient, Sessions should resign as Attorney General.
He has proven time and again that he is an obstacle to justice in this investigation. Comey's testimony this afternoon made it very clear that we don't know the full extent of Sessions' involvement with Russia. This revelation paired with what we do know makes it clear that Sessions has repeatedly undermined the integrity of the Office of Attorney General and that he is absolutely unfit for this role.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions was involved in the recommendation that Donald Trump fire FBI Director James Comey. That move violated not one but TWO pledges by Sessions to recuse himself!
After it was revealed that Sessions had met with the Russian ambassador and lied about it in his Senate confirmation hearings, the attorney general famously said he would recuse himself from anything having to do with the Russia investigation and "from any existing or future investigations of any matters related in any way to the campaigns for President of the United States."
In those same hearings, Sessions had also vowed to recuse himself from "any question involving" Hillary Clinton's emails. Comey's handling of the Clinton email investigation was the official rationale provided by the Trump administration for Comey's ouster.
Sessions's credibility is nonexistent... and his lies and conflicts of interest keep piling up.
The brazen disregard with which Sessions has treated his own recusal oaths is matched only by his disregard for our democratic principles and his clear disdain for any sort of check on this president's power.
The level of corruption we've seen from this administration is mindboggling. Whether it's lying about meetings with Russian officials under oath or the president's firing of the man in charge of the FBI's investigation, Jeff Sessions is a clear obstacle to justice and his stepping down as attorney general is critical to seeking the accountability we need from this administration.
