Fellow Illinoisan,

Last week, President Trump announced a decision with grave implications for our children and grandchildren, our economy, and America’s global leadership. By leaving the Paris Climate Accord, President Trump turned his back on 194 countries, joining Syria and Nicaragua as the only countries to reject the agreement.

President Trump justified this decision with concern for American businesses. He failed to mention that American businesses – even big oil companies like Exxon Mobil and BP – support the Paris Accord. Now countries like China will fill the void in the growing clean energy industry and create their own jobs.

This is not “America first,” this is “America last.”

Illinoisans are already experiencing the adverse effects of a changing climate. In recent years, our state has seen historic storms, floods, and droughts that have caused millions of dollars in damage. President Trump’s reckless decision will only contribute to this threat.

We must reverse course and act immediately to stop climate change. Americans must demand their President, federal and local representatives recognize the danger posed by global warming.

We can’t make America great again if we give up our best chance to save our planet.

Sincerely,

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin
