Dear Anne,

Freedom of the press is a foundational American value. The media functions as an important watchdog to hold our leaders and elected officials accountable to the people they serve. Attacks on the media in the Trump era are a threat to our democratic system.

It’s crucial to make sure the media is protected so that we have mechanisms to hold our elected officials accountable.

Please ask your members of congress and elected officials to uphold freedom of the press today!

Last week, lawmakers attempted to crack down on media access in the Capitol, declaring that reporters were not allowed to film or record audio in the Senate hallways without special permission, even though this has been done for years. This apparent attempt to prevent the public from knowing what is going on in the Capitol is one more shocking event in a string of recent anti-media incidents.

Media access is important and shouldn’t be restrained -- ask your elected officials to support a free press>>

Thank you,

Katie O’Connell, PFAW

Demand elected officials protect the right to a free press!

Dear Anne,

From right-wing cries of “fake news” to a Congressional candidate assaulting a reporter, we are seeing attacks on the constitutionally protected right to a free press like never before in history. Donald Trump has done everything he can to elevate far-right “news” outlets while going after journalists who try to hold him accountable.

Trump’s efforts to marginalize the press don’t exist in a vacuum, and the atmosphere of hostility to the media can have dire consequences. A newspaper in Kentucky had its windows shot out, a Montana Congressional candidate assaulted a reporter for simply asking about healthcare, a journalist was arrested in West Virginia for trying to ask HHS Secretary Tom Price a question, and more. The climate of animosity towards the press is worsening, and Trump is stoking the flames of that fire.

Ask elected officials across the U.S. to stand up to Trump’s attacks on the press and defend the constitutional right to a free press>>

Our free press is a crucial pillar of our democracy that separates us from dangerous regimes across the world. It is imperative that Americans have access to the facts and accountability created by a free media that is unfettered by threats from the President of the United States.

In solidarity,
