Last minute lies and dirty tricks

A new message from your friends at People For the American Way. Anne, It's Election Day today in Georgia's 6th District and one of the election's last ads from the Right Wing is one of the dirtiest. A new ad by the pro-Trump super-PAC "Great America Alliance," targeting African American voters, uses an edited recording of Barack Obama reading from his book Dreams from My Father EGREGIOUSLY out of context. In a passage from the book, Obama recounts a conversation he had with a barber named Smitty shortly after he moved to Chicago about the city's politics before the election of its first black mayor, Harold Washington: "Had to be here before Harold to understand what he means to this city," Smitty said. "Before Harold, seemed like we'd always be second-class citizens." "Plantation politics," the man with the newspaper said. "That's just what it was, too," Smitty said. "A plantation. Black people in the worst jobs. The worst housing. Police brutality rampant. But when the so-called black committeemen came around election time, we'd all line up and vote the straight Democratic ticket. Sell our souls for a Christmas turkey. White folks spitting in our faces, and we'd reward 'em with the vote." The misleading new ad in Georgia edits the passage above and presents it to make it seem as though Obama is delivering these words as his own personal opinion of Democratic politicians in general: "Plantation politics. Black people in the worst jobs. The worst housing. Police brutality rampant. But when the so-called black committeemen came around election time, we'd all line up and vote the straight Democratic ticket. Sell our souls for a Christmas turkey." This is just an update to remind you that these are the kinds of underhanded right-wing tactics we're up against in every major election. Our organizers are on the ground in GA-06 helping to get progressive voters out to cast their ballots until the polls close at 7pm. THANK YOU so much to the thousands of PFAW supporters who have supported our work on this race with a donation or by volunteering. A new message from your friends at People For the American Way.

Anne,

It’s Election Day today in Georgia’s 6th District and one of the election’s last ads from the Right Wing is one of the dirtiest.

A new ad by the pro-Trump super-PAC “Great America Alliance,” targeting African American voters, uses an edited recording of Barack Obama reading from his book Dreams from My Father EGREGIOUSLY out of context.

In a passage from the book, Obama recounts a conversation he had with a barber named Smitty shortly after he moved to Chicago about the city’s politics before the election of its first black mayor, Harold Washington:

“Had to be here before Harold to understand what he means to this city,” Smitty said. “Before Harold, seemed like we’d always be second-class citizens.”

“Plantation politics,” the man with the newspaper said.

“That’s just what it was, too,” Smitty said. “A plantation. Black people in the worst jobs. The worst housing. Police brutality rampant. But when the so-called black committeemen came around election time, we’d all line up and vote the straight Democratic ticket. Sell our souls for a Christmas turkey. White folks spitting in our faces, and we’d reward ‘em with the vote.”

The misleading new ad in Georgia edits the passage above and presents it to make it seem as though Obama is delivering these words as his own personal opinion of Democratic politicians in general:

“Plantation politics. Black people in the worst jobs. The worst housing. Police brutality rampant. But when the so-called black committeemen came around election time, we’d all line up and vote the straight Democratic ticket. Sell our souls for a Christmas turkey.”

This is just an update to remind you that these are the kinds of underhanded right-wing tactics we’re up against in every major election.

Our organizers are on the ground in GA-06 helping to get progressive voters out to cast their ballots until the polls close at 7pm.

THANK YOU so much to the thousands of PFAW supporters who have supported our work on this race with a donation or by volunteering.

No matter what happens in today’s election, we’re continuing the fight against the Right’s dangerous policy agenda and their dishonest politics.

See updates from GA-06 on PFAW’s Twitter and Facebook pages.

And please consider a donation to help keep this working going well beyond the Georgia race -- to continue the fight to resist Trump Republicans and elect progressive champions.

Thanks again, for all you do.
