Mitch McConnell had hoped to ram the bill through with a vote before the July 4 recess, but fell short of the support he needed to do it. So we're heading into next week's recess ready to organize, resist, and STOP the GOP's assault on Americans' access to lifesaving health care. Like the House version of the bill, the Senate's version repeals key protections of the Affordable Care Act, takes health care away from tens of millions of Americans, defunds Planned Parenthood, and destroys Medicaid as we know it -- all to give a MASSIVE tax cut to corporations and the richest 1%. The critical needs of building both a deep bench of progressive candidates and a pipeline to retaking progressive power in the states have never been more urgent. Here's Heike in her own words: "I am a 53-year old woman who was born with a blood disorder. I have worked for a public elementary school in California for the last 15 years, but have been denied health coverage through my district. Prior to the ACA I was turned down by every health insurance company for my pre-existing condition. This left me without any kind of coverage, and cause me to develop anxiety disorder on top of my blood conditions. We tried to cover my medical care as best as we could, but ended up having to file bankruptcy because of my medical debt. Not until MY President Obama's ACA was I able to receive medical insurance. And wouldn't you know, I have not had one anxiety attack since either. It is my firm conviction that without ACA I would not be sitting here today, writing my story! My "pre-existing" condition requires me to take blood thinners for the rest of my life, and get a simple blood test every month. Without that, however, my risk of DVT, embolism, heart failure, or stroke more than triples. After the cruel show of disregard about Americans such as myself from the Republicans, I am scared for my life. I am forever grateful for the ACA, and would like to emphasize how strongly I oppose its repeal. I would like to urge the Senate to please, please, please not turn their backs on citizens like myself. Please stop this unbelievable bill that leave millions of Americans without any coverage. You are our last hope! Thank you for listening to my story. Please feel free to share it with anybody that cares enough about people like me.
