Republicans in the Senate just voted to open debate on the repeal of the Affordable Care Act.
Because of the tenacity of Mitch McConnell, and a combination of perhaps unprecedented extremism and political cowardice on the part of other Republican senators, Trumpcare lives. And millions of Americans are left wondering if the health care they depend on will be there next year.
We need to gird for a fight over every amendment ... every attack on Medicaid, attempt to defund Planned Parenthood, and effort to give a massive tax cut to the ultrawealthy by gutting the access to health care that is literally the difference between life and death for millions.
Only TWO Republican senators voted against the motion to proceed. All the other so-called "moderates" who expressed some reservation about gutting health care for tens of millions -- Senators Portman, McCain, Heller -- caved under the pressure.
Sen. Shelly Moore Capito of West Virginia was one of three Republican senators who last week said she opposed to a bill that would repeal the Affordable Care Act without any replacement plan, saying that she didn't come to Washington to "hurt people" ... but that's what she voted on today. We know that the specifics of the legislation and amendments that will be debated over the coming days are sure to be LOADED with provisions that hurt millions of people -- and hurt them severely.
This is a shameful moment in history. Republicans have continued to sink to new lows with each passing fight on legislation, judicial and executive branch nominees, and holding Trump accountable. But today's end-run around any measure of civility and respect for the legislative process -- all to deny millions people health care -- is shocking even for them.
Thank you for all you do! More to come on how we will keep fighting against the GOP's odious attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act.
