For veterans aged 18-24, the unemployment rate remains stubbornly high at 18.1 percent. I have always said - if you want to help a vet, hire a vet. That is why my good friend, Senator Mark Kirk from Illinois, and I launched the Congressional Veterans Jobs Caucus. To help veterans find good-paying jobs, we created the "I Hire Veterans" initiative where employers can display a logo at their business to make a personal and public commitment to hiring the men and women who have sacrificed so much for our country. This week, I was proud to welcome Monster to the growing number of businesses that are signing up to be part of the "I Hire Veterans" project. When consumers see businesses display the logo, they know that those businesses are truly walking the walk. Monster has demonstrated such an impressive commitment to ending veterans' unemployment. I encourage businesses across West Virginia and this great country to join the "I Hire Veterans" project and hire veterans today. Although it is truly devastating that so many buildings, structures and roads have been severely damaged, material objects can be rebuilt or replaced; lives, however, cannot. We are so grateful to our first responders who rushed to the scene to make sure the devastation did not spread out of control. We should all take a moment to congratulate their hard work, dedication and immediate response to such an alarming incident. It is also commendable that people worked around the clock to repair the highways and roads and to help those affected in any way they could. As we continue to assess what caused the explosion, it is encouraging to hear that the community is already working together to patch up the damage. West Virginians always come together, especially in difficult situations, and I know this instance is no different. To all the families who have been impacted, know that I am talking to the appropriate local, state and federal authorities. We are anxiously waiting to hear more details to make sure this will not happen again any place else in the state.
