As we begin the work of the next Congress, I start with fresh optimism and determination to put our country's fiscal house in order. I truly believe that we can -- because the simple fact is we must. On top of that, I will continue to fight for my top priorities: keeping our promises to our seniors and veterans, achieving energy independence, addressing mass violence and ending the war in Afghanistan. I vow to each and every one of you that every day that I am your Senator, I will put our great country first. And after the nonsense of the past few years, it's more clear than ever that the Hill needs a good dose of common sense from the mountains of West Virginia. This was not the 'big fix' I wanted, but it was the best we came up with at the late hour. Since then, I have already started working again on making this a better deal for the people of West Virginia and this great country. The tough votes are still in front of us to cut our spending, reduce our $1 trillion deficit and put our fiscal house back in order. I am committed to making the right kind of spending cuts, while making sure that we sustain smart investments for the future. I am determined to not put our country further in debt, and I will not vote for any future proposals that do that without meaningful deficit reduction. Manchin's Message from the Hill to the Mountains

Time for Country-First Politics in Washington

Washington is broken. But I truly believe it's still possible to repair it. That is the reason why I have agreed to help lead a national organization that is trying to fix it -- trying to change the attitudes in Washington so we can jumpstart Congress and get it working again.

The organization is called No Labels, and its strength comes no only from its growing number of members, but also from the power of its basic idea -- putting solutions ahead of party politics.

I am co-chairing No Labels along with former Governor Jon Huntmans, a Utah Republican.
