As we continue to analyze the results of Tuesday’s landslide election victories for Democrats, we are spotting more and more important trends and lessons that very well could propel progressives to similar victories in 2018, 2020, and beyond…
…IF, that is, we are able to identify top-notch candidates and do the important messaging and voter mobilization work necessary to pull them off.
And that’s where you come in.
One of the biggest lessons of the 2017 elections is the “reverse coattails” effect and the importance of competing EVERYWHERE in state and local races.
That’s why the work of PFAW’s Next Up Victory Fund to identify and support young, progressive candidates for state and local office is so vital.
Will you keep the work of PFAW’s Next Up Victory Fund going with a monthly, sustaining donation to help us build our slate of candidates for the critical elections to come? Become one of our FIRST Inaugural Next Up Sustainers today!
In Virginia, Democrats competed in State House districts where they hadn’t even fielded candidates in years… places where they hadn’t seen the point of competing because of deeply gerrymandered Republican districts that seemed unwinnable. But across the state what we saw was that turnout SURGED in districts that had a Democrat on the ballot, driving the success of Democrats running for statewide office at the top of the ballot. AND, many of these candidates running in previously thought to be unwinnable districts WON. They weren’t just sacrificial lambs to boost statewide turnout, they competed and they won.
Give people a reason to vote and they’ll turn out!
This model is certainly applicable for upcoming congressional elections AND presidential elections.
Another thing we’re giving people to vote for is diversity -- and this offers voters a chance to directly repudiate the divisive, race-baiting grievance politics championed by Trump and Trump Republicans.
In Virginia, 14 of the 15 staunchly conservative white male incumbent Republicans who lost their seats will be replaced by legislators who are at least one of the following: women, people of color, LGBTQ, and/or YOUNG (under 40 years old) -- and most of them were Next Up candidates!
Soooo many more victories are on the horizon, but if we’re going to achieve them, we can’t let up!
Please be part of our inaugural class of Next Up sustaining members with a monthly donation to keep the work of the Next Up Victory Fund going!
Thanks for all of your incredible support!
