The Senate has a chance right now to protect the future of 800,000 Dreamers. The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program has provided Dreamers, people brought to this country as children, the opportunity to come out of the shadows and pursue the American dream.
Every person dreams of a better future for themselves, for their families, and for their country. DACA recipients deserve the ability to dream of a better future too. I will not stop fighting until there is a legislative solution that provides permanent status.
On September 5, President Trump repealed DACA, putting thousands of young undocumented immigrants at risk of deportation. If Trump is successful, these young people will be taken away from the only country they've called home and the dream that they have pursued will be taken away. Passing a clean Dream Act is a step forward for our country, anything short of that will take us backward. DACA recipients are ingrained in our communities—they are our friends, our neighbors, and our fellow Americans.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said: “Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.” I carry this quote with me in the fight for Dreamers. Every single person deserves the opportunity to pursue their dream, regardless of their skin color, their gender, or where they were born.
Today I am calling on you to join us as we stand with the Dreamers.
