In this week's Intersect, read about: - A Major Supreme Court Case Ruling on Religious Liberty - It’s Time to End Congressional Cover-Up Fund – We Need Your Help - 2018 Will Be A Critical Year for America - Trump Made Historic Rollback of National Monuments in Utah Why Masterpiece Cakeshop Case Could Bring a Major Supreme Court Ruling on Free Expression The Supreme Court heard oral arguments yesterday in a landmark case that could determine if the First Amendment to the Constitution will continue to protect the freedom of artists who wish to act in a manner consistent with their sincerely held beliefs. The case is called Masterpiece Cakeshop v. Colorado Civil Rights Commission. Alliance Defending Freedom is representing the cake shop and its owner, cake artist Jack Phillips. “Phillips said he couldn’t design a custom wedding cake for two men who requested it. He declined because using his artistic talents to celebrate a same-sex marriage would violate his Christian faith and his artistic freedom,” said CEO of Alliance Defending Freedom Michael Farris. read more <www.foxnews.com/opinion/2017/12/04/why-masterpiece-cakeshop-case-could-bring-major-supreme-court-ruling-on-free-expression.html> THINK. Regardless of whether you believe Jesus would bake the cake or not, I think we can all agree that Jesus has given us a level of liberty to decide whether we would bake the cake. Jesus had quite a band of followers back in his day. The fishermen would have hated the tax-collector, yet both of these groups were represented in Jesus’ small band of followers. We do not definitively know whether Jesus would have baked the cake but we do know that whoever was wrong, grace could make them right. And his grace is more than icing on the cake (2 Corinthians 9:8). <www.biblegateway.com/passage/ PRAY. Pray for Jack, his family, and his employees as they wait for the court’s decision. Pray for our 9 Supreme Court Justices that they will uphold the First Amendment of the Constitution and allow Americans to have religious liberty to live out the convictions of their faith. ACT. Watch cake shop owner Jack Phillips story <youtu.be/hfshnP_yqsQ>. It’s critical that as Christians we are aware of cases of religious discrimination so that we can stand united to defend religious liberty and first amendment rights. Congressional Fund to Cover-Up Sexual Harassment From sea to shining sea, what started in Hollywood with Harvey Weinstein has now impacted Washington D.C. with officials such as Congressman John Conyers. Since 1997, there have been more than 200 secret payouts, totaling $17 million. While not every payout in the fund is for sexual misconduct, one payout is one too many. This fund does more than rectify the wrongs of our elected officials, it enables despicable behavior that would get the majority of us fired from our job. But we don’t simply have a problem of sexual misconduct in Washington. There is another problem the nation would like to ignore. Surveys indicate 79 percent of American men between the ages of 18 and 30 admit to watching porn regularly. 67 percent of men between 31 and 49 admit to it. And concerning men from 50 to 68, 50 percent confess to regular porn viewing. One in three porn users is a woman.  As many as 12 percent of all websites contain porn.” read more <www.myfaithvotes.org/congressional-fund-to-cover-up-sexual-harassment/> THINK. The only thing more reprehensible than a Congressional cover-up fund for sexual allegations is the sheer existence of such a fund. Budgets reveal values and demonstrate foresight. You put aside money for that which is of importance to you. You reflect on the past as you forecast into the coming year how you anticipate spending that hard-earned money. Our budget not only anticipates reprehensible behavior by our elected officials and their staff, they also plan to keep it private. Some can’t keep their hands to themselves but want to keep these despicable actions to themselves. George Washington believed that morality and religion were the pillars upon which our democracy stood. Proverbs 14:32 <www.biblegateway.com/passage/ edifies his thought. PRAY. Pray first for those in Congress who have been perpetrators of sexual assault to be exposed. Next, pray for a moral awakening in our nation. Our elected officials are a direct representation of We The People. Pray against the sin of porn that has taken root in our society and for a movement of repentance to sweep across our nation ACT. It’s critical that we put an end to the Congressional cover-up fund in Washington D.C. that is intended to silence victims of sexual harassment at the expense of the American taxpayers. Send a message to your elected officials in Washington, with our easy and quick tool, to abolish this cover-up fund. <p2a.co/oLXOyU1> 2018 Will Be A Critical Year for America – But Are We Ready? Midterm elections historically have always had a lower voter turnout than Presidential elections. The last time in history that midterm election turnout exceeded a presidential election turnout was back in 1838. Yet there is so much at stake in the 2018 midterm elections Christians cannot afford to overlook. Our entire U.S. House of representatives will be holding elections to secure 435 seats. 33 Senate seats are up for grabs, 36 states will be holding gubernatorial races to choose their governor, there are over 728 school board nations in our largest school districts, and roughly 82% of state legislative seats across the country are holding elections. read more <www.myfaithvotes.org/2018-will-be-a-critical-year-for-america-but-are-we-ready/> THINK. In America, we have been given so much freedom –we have taken it for granted by often skipping out on midterm elections. This cannot continue to be our story. You’ve heard us say – there were 25 million evangelical Christians who were registered to vote but failed to cast a ballot in 2012. And there are over 90 million evangelicals in America today. When we unite and take a stand for biblical values, we become the most powerful voting block in the history of our nation…if we vote. In 2018 My Faith Votes will mobilize people of faith across the country, in churches, on University campuses, through television ads, social media, and utilizing voting technology that in 2016 yielded an 89% voter turnout, far surpassing the national average, and far surpassing other voter engagement initiatives. Once again in 2018, it will all come down to Christians taking responsibility to cast their ballots. PRAY. Pray for our brothers and sisters in Christ who have been apathetic to the political process. We are asking you to be part of praying for greater Christian engagement in 2018. When we seek God and bring his light and truth into our communities – we will be amazed at what God can do. ACT. Trump Made Historic Rollback of National Monuments in Utah President Trump departed for Utah on Monday to announce what could be the largest rollback of federally protected lands in history. Trump's decision on the Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante national monuments would mark an unprecedented use of presidential power to shrink the national monument designations made by two of his predecessors. The decision would shrink the protected lands in Utah by about 2 million acres. President Trump said in his speech, "With the action, I’m taking today, we will not only give back your voice over the use of this land, we will also restore your access and your enjoyment. Public lands will once again be for public use because we know that people who are free to use their land and enjoy their land are the people most determined to conserve their land." read more <www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2017/12/04/trump-travels-utah-historic-rollback-national-monuments/919209001/> THINK.
