Last night, conservatives in Congress had a chance to do something nearly everyone agreed they should do:
Fully fund the government for 2018 -- while, in the process, finding long-term solutions to help millions of children who don't have health insurance, and protecting hundreds of thousands of young immigrants who know America as their only home.
They did neither.
Despite controlling the House, the Senate, and the White House, they narrowly avoided a shutdown. They kicked the can down the road -- again -- and in doing so, left millions of vulnerable Americans out in the cold this holiday season.
Let's get ready to hold this leadership accountable in 2018.
They failed to find meaningful funding for the Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP), which helps states extend coverage to nearly 9 million uninsured kids.
They failed to find a solution to protect DACA recipients, after insisting they would -- putting 3,400 DREAMers at risk of losing their status over the next month.
They failed at these basic tasks exactly one day after moving mountains to appease their donor class -- to force through a tax bill that is one of the most historically unpopular pieces of major legislation ever.
This is how 2017 ends for conservatives in Congress: with one more action that ignores the wishes of the American people they're in Washington to serve.
Their priorities are clear, and so are ours.
We'll spend 2018 fighting harder than ever to ensure CHIP gets the long-term funding it needs, DACA recipients are permanently protected, and Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan are held accountable for their miserable leadership.
Let's get to work:
