I am also pleased to serve with the Energy Committee's ranking member, Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska. Both have visited our great state and are committed to working toward and an all-of-the-above energy approach that leads to energy independence. A few weeks ago, I was very encouraged that the FDA Advisory Committee voted to reclassify these highly addictive drugs containing hydrocodone from getting into the wrong hands. Unfortunately, the FDA has not acted to reschedule these drugs from Schedule III to Schedule II. That is why my colleagues and I sent a bipartisan letter to the FDA urging the agency to take immediate action. The American people have waited far too long for action from the FDA. It has been 14 years since the initial petition requesting evaluation of the proper scheduling of hydrocodone combination drugs. In those 14 years, there has been a staggering number of hydrocodone-related deaths and a drastic increase in non-medical users of these products. Manchin's Message from the Hill to the Mountains

Making America Energy Independent

Some of us have been around long enough to remember when our country first figured out it was time we stop relying on other countries for our energy needs. It was in 1973. An Arab oil embargo sent shock waves through the U.S. economy with gas prices soaring from 39 cents to 56 cents a gallon. Then-President Nixon proposed "Project Independence" as the first step in kicking America's oil import habit.

Forty years have come and gone since then. And in that time, our political leaders have argued non-stop about what to do, even as we have fought wars over oil that have cost us billions of dollars and thousands of American lives to make America energy independent.

Now is the time to develop a strong, bipartisan energy plan that uses all of our domestic energy resources, and we can start right here in West Virginia.
