Fighting for CHIP Funding

For 20 years, the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), with strong bipartisan support, has ensured that no children fall through the cracks of the health care system. CHIP insures 9 million American kids and Oregon’s CHIP program, called Oregon Healthy Kids, in 2016 helped more than 140,000 Oregon children access health care.

Thanks to CHIP, these Oregon children have been able to access check-ups, immunizations, dental care, doctors’ visits, and other important health care services. However, every day, the families of nine million children across the country who rely on CHIP remain in limbo as Congress continues to kick the can down the road on the program’s funding. Jeff knows that is unacceptable, and is fighting for a long-term solution for CHIP funding.

Right now, there is a bipartisan bill ready and waiting to be brought to the Senate floor. It would extend the Children’s Health Insurance Program through 2022. Jeff is urging his Senate colleagues on both sides of the aisle to urgently prioritize ensuring the children who rely on CHIP can keep getting the care they need and pass this bipartisan legislation. Nine million American children are waiting.

Pushing to Overturn the FCC’s Net Neutrality Decision

The internet has been the most powerful tool of the 21st century. It has allowed people from all walks of life to launch interesting ideas or innovative startups, leading to some of our nation’s most successful and well-known companies.

But the FCC’s December vote to dismantle net neutrality rules struck a huge blow to that innovation and openness. It paves the way for the giant telecom companies that control our access to the internet to block or slow down websites, or charge extra fees to get good-quality internet service. These giant companies could give better and cheaper access to their own content and prevent you from seeing content produced by their competitors or entrepreneurs. It could turn the internet into a place where big telecom companies can act as censors, gatekeepers, or toll collectors.

The FCC’s attack on net neutrality helps a handful of huge companies at the expense of everyone else, and Jeff is joining his colleagues to do everything possible to overturn it, pushing for a vote in Congress soon to block this repeal. Consumers and entrepreneurs alike need a free, open and competitive internet.

Preserving the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument

The administration’s proposed move to strip protections from and shrink Oregon’s Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument is a monumental mistake.

The Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument is a unique and special place, unlike anywhere else in the United States. This administration is ignoring the voices of thousands of Oregonians who have spoken out in favor of the monument, and is recklessly risking the future of irreplaceable biodiversity and natural wonder.

This national treasure belongs to the American people, and Jeff believes it must be preserved so that all Americans can enjoy it now and for generations to come. Jeff is urging Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke to cease this unprecedented “review” of Oregon’s monument. If, like Jeff, you want to protect the Cascade-Siskiyou National Monument, now is the time to make your voice heard in support of this treasured public land.

Protecting DREAMers

Over 100 DREAMers are losing their legal status, jobs and opportunities every day that Congress does not act on a DACA fix.

DREAMers have spent years strengthening our communities, our state, and our nation. They have grown up in America and are Americans in every way other than paperwork. America is better off for their contributions, yet our nation is turning its back on them by refusing to pass the DREAM Act.

Jeff knows that for the sake of all the DREAMers who risk being forced to leave the only home they’ve ever known, fixing DACA cannot wait. He is calling for immediate passage of the DREAM Act to ensure brave young DREAMers can keep contributing to the nation they love.

Pushing Back Against Attacks on Public Health

The Trump administration is threatening the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) ability to provide critical protections for the environment and public health by trying to cut its budget. The EPA is already badly underfunded, understaffed and struggling to perform its basic and legally required functions. Dozens of health crises across the country, from lead-contaminated water to air pollution hotspots, will only worsen if the cuts go into effect.

Jeff is fighting to hold polluters accountable and protect clean air and water projects across the United States by stopping these budget cuts. Jeff led three dozen Senators in telling Senate leadership: oppose any legislation that seeks to dismantle the EPA by further cutting the agency’s already decimated funding levels. Jeff knows that in order to protect Americans, our government must support, not slash, the EPA’s work.
