The Rigell Report: An Update on Sequestration

Dear Friend,

Sequestration is at the top of the news locally and across the nation.  Because the effects of sequestration are already rippling through our local economy, and affecting national defense, stopping it with a wiser alternative remains my #1 priority.

Here is a re-cap of the legislation that I have supported, each of which, if signed into law by the President, would stop sequestration:

  • I co-sponsored the Down Payment to Protect National Security Act of 2013 which has not come to the floor for a vote;
  • I voted for, and the House passed, the Sequestration Replacement and Reconciliation Act;
  • I voted for, and the House passed, the Spending Reduction Act.

The two bills which passed the House were promptly sent to the Senate for consideration, yet neither bill has been brought to the Senate floor, nor has the Senate offered an alternative to sequestration. This is deeply frustrating to me and given the adverse impact of sequestration to jobs and national defense, it is unacceptable.

Though it is instructive to review how we arrived at this point, attributing responsibility does not stop the cuts or protect local jobs. What is required - and what I continue to fight for - is advancing a wise legislative alternative to sequestration.

I again call on Speaker Boehner, Senator Reid, and President Obama to put what is best for our country ahead of all else.  I call on Speaker Boehner to keep the House in session until sequestration is stopped.

Though the number of days till sequestration would take effect are few, I have not and will not stop fighting until we have a better solution.
