45 years ago today, the Supreme Court ruled in Roe v. Wade that women have the right to access safe, legal abortion.
12 years later, in 1985, I sat down with a small group of feminist friends to try to find a way to put real money behind women candidates who would defend this decision and work to improve the lives of women and families.
Thus, EMILY's List and our mission of electing pro-choice Democratic women was born. And I'm proud that we've never strayed from exclusively supporting women who will defend Roe.
With a woman's right to choose under attack from the White House to Congress to state legislatures, our mission is still vital.
Donate today so we can continue supporting women candidates who will always defend Roe.
When we started EMILY's List, we debated if we should consider supporting anti-choice women candidates. And it's a position I still get questions about to this very day.
Do you really have to support abortion? Is it really that important?
It's ludicrous to argue that women should be equal participants in our society but that we don't get to control our own bodies.
After 45 years, women controlling their own bodies shouldn't be up for debate. But with Donald Trump having the power to stack the courts with anti-choice judges, the right to choose is in serious danger.
And Republican legislators are now going even farther. They're mounting attacks on birth control, preventive health care services for women, and more. It infuriates me... and makes me more determined to fight back!
So we have to make sure we flip the Senate — which reviews Trump's judicial nominees — this year. And we need to replace anti-choice Republicans who are pushing all these anti-woman legislative attacks, too.
Mark the anniversary of Roe v. Wade by donating today so we can continue supporting women candidates who will defend choice:
