Trump advisor Stephen Miller has been pulling the strings on Trump’s immigration policy, ensuring that it doesn’t stray from the white nationalist agenda Trump ran on and Miller champions.
Miller, who cut his teeth working for then-Senator Jeff Sessions, was reportedly instrumental in tanking the bipartisan deal to protect DREAMers and avert a government shutdown. The deal, presented to Trump by Senators Dick Durbin and Lindsey Graham, insufficiently served white supremacist goals because it allowed too much immigration from "shithole countries." In fact, it seems that Miller’s main role in the White House is making sure that the concerns of the extreme nativists and white nationalists in Trump’s base are always front and center with the president.
Stephen Miller never should have had a place in the White House, and it is long past time for him to leave it.
Miller has had a hand in the administration’s worst immigration positions – from policy positions that promote cutting legal immigration in half to the Muslim ban to ending the Temporary Protected Status for immigrants from El Salvador.
Miller’s continued presence in the administration helps to legitimize white supremacy and the so-called ‘Alt-Right.’ And with Miller acting as a puppet-master, yanking Trump’s strings to keep him in line with the nativist immigration policy he ran on, it’s a major obstacle to any bipartisan deal to protect DREAMers or address other important immigration issues.
