This week is National School Choice Week! On Monday, January
22nd, President Trump signed the National School Choice
“By giving parents more control over their children’s
education, we are making strides toward a future of unprecedented
educational attainment and freedom of choice. Under the leadership of
Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos, we will continue to advance school
choice so that every child in America has access to the tools best
suited to enabling them to achieve the American Dream.”

I applaud this move by the President because I believe school
choice is rooted in an important biblical principle. God entrusts
children to parents, and parents are primarily responsible for a
child’s education (Proverbs 22:6).
So what does this mean? I believe it means that parents in the
United States should be empowered to pursue the best possible
education for their children that supports the values of their
faith…regardless of their zip code or economic status.
However, in most states in America, parents are stripped of their
ability to choose the best education option for their child. If a
family can’t afford a private school or to homeschool, their only
option is the public school in their zip code. If they wish to send
their child to a better public school, their only option is to buy a
nicer house in a better district. This simply isn’t possible for many
families across America.
Our current education system discriminates against the
impoverished. It’s time we have equal education opportunity in America
for all families regardless of their zip code.Â
As Christians, we should champion the cause of school choice not
only for our own children and grandchildren but also for the less
fortunate families in our nation.
