One of the reasons the CFPB has been so successful is because it was designed to be free of political influence by big banks' lobbyists. The State of the Union

This week, President Trump gave his first State of the Union address. Unfortunately, President Trump offered few surprises and even fewer real solutions to the problems facing our nation.

As president, Trump is following up his tax scam that overwhelmingly benefits the wealthiest individuals and most powerful corporations with an infrastructure proposal that puts Wall Street’s profits ahead of good jobs and needed projects.

A true commitment to American jobs and building for our future would not force drivers to pay “Trump Tolls” that line the pockets of Wall Street. Instead, it would have strong “Buy America” provisions and guarantee that projects pay good wages; would ensure that rural America doesn’t get left behind; and would keep intact protections against dangerous pollution and public health problems. The proposal outlined by the White House fails all of these tests.

On top of this administration’s failures to fight for working Americans, Trump has repeatedly sabotaged a bipartisan deal to help Dreamers, despite the fact that he created this problem and that he promised a congressional solution for DACA recipients.

Jeff’s State of the Union guest, Leo Reyes, is living proof of the fear and uncertainty Trump has created. Since DACA was implemented, 11,000 Oregonian Dreamers like Leo have strengthened our local economies and the fabric of our communities. But now these Oregonians are living in limbo, along with hundreds of thousands of young people across the nation. Sadly, President Trump reaffirmed on Tuesday night that he is more interested in using these young community members as political bargaining chips than in passing legislation that has overwhelming support across the political spectrum.

We can work together to make our government one “of, by and for the people,” not just for the privileged and powerful. Jeff will fight for the priorities of the American people, and urges all Oregonians to join him in improving the state of our union and making our “We the People” democracy work for all Americans.

Standing Up for Consumers

In the wake of the Great Recession, one of the most vital tools in getting the American economy back on track was the establishment of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), an independent banking regulator that took on Wall Street abuses and protected American consumers. In just six years, the CFPB has returned nearly $12 billion to more than 29 million cheated consumers!

One of the reasons the CFPB has been so successful is because it was designed to be free of political influence by big banks’ lobbyists. The Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act established the CFPB as an independent regulator – funded by the Federal Reserve, not Congress – to protect it from political interference by Congress or the Executive Branch.

However, some of Jeff’s colleagues are seeking to change that, and subject the CFPB’s funding to partisan political whims.
