A week after sequestration went into effect, we now turn to voting on a Continuing Resolution to prevent a government shutdown and avoid unnecessary damage to our economy. My hope is that this next financial hurdle will be easier to overcome compared to previous years. The House of Representatives passed their funding bill, or C.R., this week. The bill now comes to the Senate. In the weeks to come, I will work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to pass a C.R. that keeps the government running and moves our country closer to the "big fix" we need for long-term fiscal sustainability. For once, let's commit to a regular budget process where open debate and bipartisan compromise lead us to tackling our serious fiscal problems reasonably and responsibly. ________________________________________ Congratulating West Virginia Native on Nomination This week, President Obama nominated a West Virginia native, Sylvia Mathews Burwell, as the new Director of the Office of Management and Budget. Sylvia has an impressive record that proves she is a great candidate for the job. She has worked closely with Erskine Bowles, of the Simpson-Bowles Commission on a deficit reduction, and helped produce the last balanced budget and budget surplus our country has enjoyed in over a decade. Her budgetary experience in both the public and private sector at the Clinton administration, the Gates Foundation and the Walmart Foundation, matched with the bipartisan relationships she has built over the years, shows that she is a public servant ready to take on this country's financial challenges. I would be honored to work alongside a fellow West Virginian as we work on commonsense solutions to control our spending and once again become a fiscally responsible nation. The West Virginia values Sylvia embraced while growing up in Hinton will help set our nation's priorities as we solve these tough problems. I look Sylvia's leadership in the coming months. _________________________________________ <iqs3.solutions.lmit.com/iqextranet/Customers/quorum_manchin-iq/ IHIREVETSSmaller.JPG> March 8, 2013 Recent Photos Senator Manchin sets the record straight on background checks on The Situation Room with CNN's Wolf Blitzer. <iqs3.solutions.lmit.com/iqextranet/iqClickTrk.aspx manchin-iq&crop=17832.10834624.10569096.14212520&redirect=http%3a%2f%2fw ww.youtube.com%2fwatch%3fv%3dxS2lLlH7EHY> <iqs3.solutions.lmit.com/iqextranet/iqClickTrk.aspx manchin-iq&crop=17832.10834624.10569096.14212520&redirect=http%3a%2f%2fw ww.cnn.com%2fvideo%2f%23%2fvideo%2fbestoftv%2f2013%2f03%2f07%2fexp-tsr-m anchin-background-checks.cnn> Senator Manchin delivers a speech to the Association for Corporate Growth. <iqs3.solutions.lmit.com/iqextranet/iqClickTrk.aspx manchin-iq&crop=17832.10834624.10569096.14212520&redirect=http%3a%2f%2fj oemanchin.tumblr.com%2f%23> <iqs3.solutions.lmit.com/iqextranet/iqClickTrk.aspx manchin-iq&crop=17832.10834624.10569096.14212520&redirect=http%3a%2f%2fy outu.be%2faRu6-tzHkfA> Senator Manchin meets with veterans and their families at a National Guard event in Charleston. <iqs3.solutions.lmit.com/iqextranet/iqClickTrk.aspx manchin-iq&crop=17832.10834624.10569096.14212520&redirect=https%3a%2f%2f www.facebook.com%2fJoeManchinIII%3fref%3dhl%23!%2fphoto.php%3ffbid%3d101 52616083535161%26amp%3bset%3da.10150152465810161.398532.1015013539575516 1%26amp%3btype%3d1%26amp%3btheater> ____________________________ In The News-Week of March 8, 2013 Manchin, Tester, Heller, Boozman introduce bill to protect value of Purple Heart, Bronze Star <iqs3.solutions.lmit.com/iqextranet/iqClickTrk.aspx manchin-iq&crop=17832.10834624.10569096.14212520&redirect=http%3a%2f%2fm anchin.senate.gov%2fpublic%2findex.cfm%2fpress-releases%3fID%3d53cc1c11- bc49-439a-83d7-9111d74c7746> Manchin, Kirk Continue Bipartisan Negotiations on Criminal Background Checks <iqs3.solutions.lmit.com/iqextranet/iqClickTrk.aspx manchin-iq&crop=17832.10834624.10569096.14212520&redirect=http%3a%2f%2fm anchin.senate.gov%2fpublic%2findex.cfm%2fpress-releases%3fID%3d533cde98- 39f7-4037-ad9f-43b93cff60c8> Manchin, Rockefeller, Warren, Brown Introduce Bill to Preserve Retired Coal Miners' Benefits <iqs3.solutions.lmit.com/iqextranet/iqClickTrk.aspx manchin-iq&crop=17832.10834624.10569096.14212520&redirect=http%3a%2f%2fm anchin.senate.gov%2fpublic%2findex.cfm%2fpress-releases%3fID%3dff05ded0- 4cfd-4fcf-8317-1bc519b71290> Manchin Encourages West Virginians to Participate in Library of Congress Surplus Book Program <iqs3.solutions.lmit.com/iqextranet/iqClickTrk.aspx manchin-iq&crop=17832.10834624.10569096.14212520&redirect=http%3a%2f%2fm anchin.senate.gov%2fpublic%2findex.cfm%2fpress-releases%3fID%3d176437b0- e64e-4e6e-93c7-6cba9d5340d2> ____________________________ Manchin's Message from the Hill to the Mountains Supporting Our Second Amendment Rights In the wake of the unspeakable tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut, an elevated conversation on gun rights has persisted across this country.
