I always look forward to these state work periods where I can tour areas across our beautiful state and talk to West Virginians, hear their feedback and discuss their commonsense solutions to achieving a stronger, more robust West Virginia and America. This week was no different on my "Commonsense Solutions" tour. I truly enjoyed meeting with our miners, veterans and students. Their input is invaluable to learn where they stand on important issues and how I can best serve them back on Capitol Hill. I also had great conversations with small business owners, airport officials, bankers and labor leaders about creating jobs and growing our economy here at home. The bill would also directly protect the Clarksburg mail processing plant from closing. In West Virginia, especially in our rural areas, post offices are more than just places to send and receive mail -- they are truly the lifelines of their communities and the only way a town is able to stay connected. I have been working closely with local officials to keep the Clarksburg mailing center open and I will remain in close contact with them throughout this process. In the meantime, this bill will help fix the Postal Service's financial problems while saving jobs, creating revenue and making sure our small businesses, seniors, veterans and rural residents will continue to receive the mailing services they count on. Manchin's Message from the Hill to the Mountains

Working Toward a "Grand Bargain"

If you had stayed awake through the early Saturday morning hours before the Senate's recess began, you could have witnessed some of the best and worse of Congress.

For the first time in four years, the Senate actually voted on the budget. And while critics deride the vote as an exercise in futility, it is a positive step in the right direction.

Sadly, both the House and the Senate budgets passed along party lines, so it's clear that much work remains for us to find a balanced approach that both parties can embrace. It is finally time to strike a grand bargain.
