Honoring the First Responders of West, TX

'Nothing will ever shake the memory of their heroism and their bravery'

Speaking at the memorial service for the first responders of West, Senator Cornyn honored the men who lost their lives in the explosion.  Excerpts of his speech are below.

Today we honor the lives of 12 great men, who gave their lives in an enduring act of love for their neighbors, their families, and their community.  When the call went out for help, these men, along with countless others in West, ran immediately toward the danger, not away from it, they ran toward it, looking for a way they might help.

And though they were taken from us in a blast that shook the earth, and shattered buildings, nothing will ever shake the memory of their heroism and their bravery.

In the aftermath of a tragedy like this, we find ourselves asking the question, why? But as we remember the fallen, let us also ask the question how?

How does one find such great courage, as these men did, to face overwhelming danger on behalf of their community, their families, and their friends?  How does one find such selflessness, to put the safety of everyone else before your own?  And how does one find such love, to be willing to lay down your life, so that others might live?

This will forever be the legacy of those that ran toward the fire last week.  Were here today asking an Almighty God to give comfort to the grieving.  May He bring healing to those who were injured, and may we never forget the courage and the resolve the people of West, and this great community, have shown the world.

I will never forget what one resident of West told me when I came here last Friday. He said, Being a Texan doesnt just describe where youre from, it describes who your family is.  Ill never forget that.
