Mark Kirk U.S. Senator for Illinois Dear Friends, As your Senator, it is one of my top priorities to make sure I stay connected with families throughout Illinois - from Southern Illinois to the Wisconsin border. This past week I traveled up and down our state, and I want to update you on my trip. On Monday, I attended aCongressional Prayer Breakfast [link 1] in Collinsville with Representatives John Shimkus and Rodney Davis, where over 600 people gathered to hear keynote speakers like Andy Benes, the former St. Louis Cardinals pitcher. [image = www.kirk.senate.gov/images/prayerbkfst2.png] *Senator Kirk speaking with Prayer Breakfast attendees* Later that day Ivisited Scott Air Force Base, [link 2] where General Paul Selva, the head of Air Mobility Command, assured me there are no plans to close the base. Scott is vital to our national defense and protecting it also means protecting the Metro East area economy. Below is a photo of our meeting: [image = www.kirk.senate.gov/images/scott.jpeg] *Above (from left to right): General Selva, Sen. Kirk, Major General David Allvin and Rep. Shimkus* Congressman Davis and I met with members of myAgriculture Advisory Board [link 3]on Tuesday.I appreciated the input from all members of the board, including chairman Terry Ferguson, and their dedication to supporting our important agriculture industry in Illinois. I want to make sure the business climate in Illinois remains as stable and as dynamic as possible for our farmers. On Wednesday I met with Lake County Board Chairman Aaron Lawlor [link 4] and other county leaders to discuss the recent extreme flood damage throughout our state. The damage in Lake County alone is estimated to cost around $4.8 million - not including damages to homes. To read more about what we discussed in our meeting, click here [link 5]. Later in the week, I spoke with Fox 32 about the need to dramatically upgrade our federal support to Chicago law enforcement to end gang-related gun violence in our communities. Too often families lose their loved ones due to senseless gun violence. My goal is to crush the violent drug gangs like the Gangster Disciples in Chicagos streets by drying up the supply of illegal weapons. You can watch theinterview by clicking the play button below. [image = www.kirk.senate.gov/images/fox32.png] [link 6] *Video: Senator Kirk on Fox 32 discussing fighting drug gangs* On Friday I traveled to North Chicago with Senator Dick Durbin to visit the LEARN Public Charter School [link 7] campus on the edge of Naval Station Great Lakes. LEARNs North Chicago School opened in September 2012, marking an important step in improving the educational opportunities for all students in North Chicago, including military families. With over 80 percent of LEARN students meeting or exceeding state standards, the LEARN network has a proven track record of success in Chicago. [image = www.kirk.senate.gov/images/students.jpg] *Senators Kirk and Durbin take questions from the students of LEARN North Chicago* While in North Chicago, Senator Durbin and I toured Naval Station Great Lakes and met with Commanding Officer Captain Randall Lynch [link 8]. I am grateful to Captain Lynch and all of the Naval Station sailors who volunteered their time to help residents during the recent floods. I intend to work with Senator Durbin to ensure Great Lakes Station has the necessary resources it needs to continue thriving. To learn more about my work on your behalf, please visit my website www.kirk.senate.gov [link 9]. It is an honor to represent you in the Senate. Very Truly Yours, Mark Kirk United States Senator ###
