Many serious accusations emerged this week, from the I.R.S. targeting certain political groups, to last year's Benghazi attack and the government's seizure of Associated Press journalists' phone records. Although all of these charges must be investigated, I find the I.R.S. allegations to be tremendously concerning. The I.R.S. has a lot of power, and to find out that they have used that power to target groups based on political ideologies is not only unacceptable, but it is criminal and un-American. Government agencies using their bureaucratic muscle to target groups cannot be tolerated, and those individuals who are responsible must be held accountable. Going forward, my colleagues and I will be working on legislation to make sure government employees who use their positions to wrongly advance their political agenda be fired, lose their accrued benefits and face jail time. This week, I was thrilled to announce that $1,045,590 in federal funding was granted to help alleviate the cost of West Virginia's emergency response and relief during the disastrous storm. This is tremendous news for the communities in West Virginia that are still working to recover from the storm's devastation.
