Working for West Virginians

As our economy remains sluggish and continues to putter along at a slow pace, we cannot lose sight of the bigger issue: jobs. That's why, for the next week, I will travel around West Virginia on my "Working for West Virginians" tour to discuss our economy and how we can continue to create and maintain jobs in our state.

As I meet with business leaders, small business owners, bankers and community officials, I will address ways to improve training in the workforce, ideas to advance opportunities for small businesses and ways our community banks impact local economies. West Virginians have always elected me to be their voice, listen to their priorities, respond to their concerns and consider their commonsense ideas. I truly look forward to visiting our communities around West Virginia all week.

Focusing on Energy

On Tuesday, I, along with Senators Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) and David Vitter (R-LA), announced the Chemical Safety Improvement Act, a groundbreaking, bipartisan piece of legislation to ensure the safety of everyday consumer products and better protect American families. Our agreement shows that protecting our health and environment does not have to impede our economic growth.

This week, I was also proud to introduce, with my good friend, Senator John Hoeven (R-ND), the All-Of-The-Above Federal Building Energy Conservation Act to improve the energy efficiency of federal buildings. We should be using all of our abundant resources, including coal, to power our nation in the most efficient way possible. Our bill accomplishes this and proves that the federal government can lead the way in using fossil fuels to achieve greater energy efficiency.

Manchin's Message from the Hill to the Mountains

Connecting with West Virginians

I didn't know it at the time, but at the ripe old age of 10, I started to learn the importance of serving the people of West Virginia. It all began with me working for my grandfather in our town's grocery store. I bagged and delivered groceries, priced the goods and stocked the supplies for Papa Joe.

I did that until I was old enough to start working in Dad's furniture shop. Those in our family who were muscular enough worked in the warehouse loading trucks and delivering furniture until the age of 16. At that point, Dad gave us a blazer and made us salesmen. And he gave us this piece of advice: "There's no such thing as shoppers. They're all buyers, they just don't know it yet."

In other words, never underestimate the value of connecting with people, truly understanding their needs and delivering the best services to them.
