<iqs3.solutions.lmit.com/iqextranet/Customers/quorum_coats-iq/co ats_topbanner.jpg> Dear Friend, Thank you for signing up to receive my email newsletter. These newsletters will cover a variety of topics, including events happening in Indiana, legislation being considered in Congress, and my perspective on current issues. My hope is to keep you updated and informed on how issues in Washington may impact Hoosiers. I welcome your feedback. Thanks for reading, Dan Coats _____ Honoring America's Heroes this Memorial Day From the founding days of our nation to Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, hundreds of thousands of men and women have sacrificed their lives to defend our country. On Monday, Hoosiers will gather across the state for parades and ceremonies to honor the brave service members who have given the ultimate sacrifice. Saluting our military heroes should not just occur on a designated holiday, but every day of the year. One way our nation can show its support is by ensuring that our troops and veterans have the care they need and deserve. Unfortunately, many veterans and military personnel have experienced difficulties receiving this help and care. Take for example disability claims at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). The average wait time for veterans' claims to be processed in Indianapolis is over 600 days. It is unconscionable that our brave men and women who answered the call of duty to serve our country are left waiting for nearly two years for a decision on their disability claims. America's veterans deserve better. On Wednesday, I met with Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel and Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki to discuss this unacceptable backlog of disability claims. As a member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction and Veterans Affairs, I am continuing to work with my colleagues to push for greater collaboration between the Department of Defense and the VA so claims can be streamlined and processed in a more effective, efficient and timely manner. Our government must fulfill its duty to our veterans just as our troops have fulfilled their duty to our government. _____ Celebrating Notre Dame's Father Hesburgh This week, I had the privilege of celebrating Rev. Theodore Hesburgh's 70th anniversary as an ordained priest and his 96th birthday at a ceremony in the U.S. Capitol. Father Hesburgh is the President Emeritus at the University of Notre Dame and served as President of the distinguished school from 1952-1987. Father Hesburgh once said, "Whatever you value, be committed to it and let nothing distract you from this goal. The uncommitted life, like Plato's unexamined life, is not worth living." Truly, Father Hesburgh has lived a committed life - a life dedicated to God, country and Notre Dame. From South Bend, Indiana, to Washington, D.C., and even across the globe, he continues to leave a remarkable imprint on the lives of every person he encounters. His extraordinary vision and historic leadership transformed Notre Dame into an academic beacon for the modern world. He also has utilized his unique gifts to make a difference in a number of diverse ways. He has served US. Presidents and popes, advised banks and international commissions, and has been an influential advocate for peace and justice. Father Hesburgh is an inspirational example to me as well as so many other Hoosiers. He truly demonstrates what it means to life live to its fullest, to serve others and to be a citizen of the world.
