Immigration Reform Legislation is Promising, but More Work Needed Votes to open debate on bipartisan proposal (WASHINGTON, DC) – Today, U.S. Senator Dean Heller (R-NV) voted in favor of moving debate forward on immigration reform legislation, S. 744. Following the vote, Senator Heller issued this statement: "Our nation has been coping with a broken immigration system for too long, which is why it is so important that both Democrats and Republicans approach the upcoming debate seriously, and with an eye towards getting something done. So far, Democrats and Republicans have been working together in a good faith effort to create a bipartisan proposal that just may be able to solve this problem. But while this is a promising piece of legislation, there are certain areas of the bill that must be addressed. “As I introduce amendments in coming days to address these concerns, I will continue to work with my colleagues to improve the bill, protect the portions of it that are already good, and hopefully help shape it into legislation that can pass the Senate and the House. In the meantime, Senate Leadership must continue to allow for open, transparent debate and an inclusive amendment process so that the final product is the best that it can be,” said Senator Dean Heller.
