The debate about our flawed immigration system is important, but in the end I could not support this bill. It did not begin by ensuring a secure border, which is a necessary component for any immigration reform to be truly effective. Legal status for those who broke the law, as well as taxpayer benefits like education assistance and tax credits were given almost immediately. The promise of a secure border, however, was at best years away, and could have been abandoned if legally challenged. We should not repeat the mistakes of the past. The two pieces of legislation would then be merged in a conference committee, approved by both the House and Senate, and presented for the President's consideration. Senator Johanns e-Update
June 27, 2013

The Senate just passed an almost 1200-page bill designed to overhaul our nation’s immigration laws.

You can visit my or click for more information about the legislation and some of my main concerns with it.

Despite its passage today, this legislation has a long way to go. For this immigration legislation to become law, the House of Representatives would have to pass a version of the bill. The two pieces of legislation would then be merged in a conference committee, approved by both the House and Senate, and presented for the President’s consideration.
