These newsletters will cover a variety of topics, including events happening in Indiana, legislation being considered in Congress, and my perspective on current issues. My hope is to keep you updated and informed on how issues in Washington may impact Hoosiers. I welcome your feedback. Thanks for reading, Dan Coats _____ A Time for Celebrating and Giving Thanks When President John Adams wrote of the first Independence Day, he said, "It ought to be commemorated as a day of deliverance by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other..." I am looking forward to celebrating with my family over the coming days, as I am sure you are too. But Independence Day also is a time for reflection and a time to give thanks. When our Founding Fathers risked their lives to sign a document announcing the birth of America, their brave declaration of freedom changed the course of history and revolutionized the world. These men risked their lives to create a republic that values individual rights, freedom, and liberty. Today, despite the many challenges we may face, America is still a beacon of hope for the rest of the world. When I served as U.S. Ambassador to Germany, former Secretary of State Colin Powell shared with me a story about a time when he was traveling in India. As he drove through a crowded street, he saw a bystander with a sign in large bold letters that read, "Yankee, go home." Beneath that line, in parenthesis, it read, "And please take me with you." That story is symbolic of how America is perceived by millions around the world. We should be grateful to live in a place desired by so many. My mother came to this country from Sweden in search of a better life and the opportunity to pursue the American Dream. What my mother learned and passed down to her children is that with these freedoms granted to us as American citizens come responsibilities. We have the responsibility to cherish and defend the Constitution. We have the responsibility to be engaged citizens in our communities. We have the responsibility to vote and take part in our electoral process. And we have the responsibility to come to the aid of our neighbors when in need. It us up to all of us to protect and honor these freedoms for our children and grandchildren. I hope you enjoy time with family and friends as we celebrate and give thanks for the freedoms and blessings we enjoy as Americans.
