These 135 veterans came from all across our state to be part of the first honor flight designated for Nebraskans who served in Korea. It was an honor to speak with these heroes and to personally thank them for their service to our country. I was humbled to be a part of their experience. I am also humbled to serve as their advocate on the Veterans' Affairs Committee. In this role, I am pressing the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to step up plans for a new Omaha VA Medical Center. It is presently 18th out of 20 on VA's list of major construction projects. However, the current facility is deteriorating, and was forced to temporarily close operating rooms earlier this year. Today I pressed Dr. Robert Jesse, Principal Deputy Under Secretary for Health in the Department of Veterans Affairs, to make the Omaha VA Medical Center a priority, and I emphasized the need for a new facility. We need to work with the VA to ensure our veterans future health care needs are addressed in an appropriate facility. Senator Johanns e-Update
October 30, 2013

I had the privilege yesterday of meeting with a group of Korean War veterans from Nebraska at the Korean War Memorial in Washington, D.C. These 135 veterans came from all across our state to be part of the first honor flight designated for Nebraskans who served in Korea.  It was an honor to speak with these heroes and to personally thank them for their service to our country. I was humbled to be a part of their experience.

I am also humbled to serve as their advocate on the Veterans’ Affairs Committee. In this role, I am pressing the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to step up plans for a new Omaha VA Medical Center. It is presently 18th out of 20 on VA’s list of major construction projects.
