RECENTLY IN WASHINGTON

PURSUING ISLAMIC TERRORISTS

The terrorist group known as ISIL poses a clear and present danger to the United States of America. I stand behind President Obama’s decision to build an international coalition to chase the terrorists down wherever they exist. Recently, I spoke with ABC4 News sharing my views of what must be done to address this threat.

You can read my response to President Obama's speech along with responses from other members of the Utah delegation in this Salt Lake Tribune story.

WHY ALLOW LIBYANS INTO THE COUNTRY TO STUDY NUCLEAR SCIENCE OR AVIATION?

Democrats argued Wednesday in a committee hearing that Libyan nationals should be permitted to come to the US to pursue studies in nuclear science and aviation. This week, I joined Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte and Rep. Trey Gowdy in introducing a bill that would stop the Obama Administration from lifting a 30-year prohibition on allowing Libyans to study these fields in the U.S. You can read more about this bill here.

In my remarks, I reminded members that there is no nuclear facility in Libya. Why would we need to train Libyans in nuclear science?  You can watch a brief clip of my comments by clicking the image above or watch the full four-minute segment here.

FEDERAL AGENCIES AVOIDING ACCOUNTABILITY

Two hearings on Capitol Hill this week highlighted problems with federal agencies refusing to provide documents and information to federal Inspectors General (IG) as required by law. I had the opportunity to question the Department of Justice Inspector General Michael Horowitz Tuesday morning in the Judiciary Committee. I asked him what barriers he encountered while trying to investigate the Fast & Furious gun running operation.

Watch the video here.

On Wednesday, Horowitz again testified before the Oversight Committee and was joined by IGs from the EPA and Peace Corps. I asked them to respond to the Obama Office of Management and Budget letter claiming that “federal departments and agencies in this administration value the work of IG offices and are almost uniformly successful in getting them the information they need to perform their responsibilities.” As you can imagine, they did not agree. You can watch their response here.

UTAH STUDENTS WIN STEM COMPETITION

Three Utah students were recognized in the First Annual Congressional App Competition. Patrick Chen of Cottonwood Heights and William Guss of Salt Lake City won the competition with their breast cancer diagnostic app.  Honorable mention went to Skyline High School’s Kai Reyes, who designed a challenging arcade-style top-down tank battle game for all ages. You can read more about the competition and the winners here.
