FIRST OVERSIGHT HEARING:  EMPOWERING INVESTIGATIONS OF FEDERAL AGENCIES

One of our most important tools for fighting federal waste, fraud and abuse are independent Inspectors General, who investigate federal agencies.  By law, agencies are required to provide IG’s with any documents requested during an investigation.

Our first Oversight hearing of the 114thCongress addressed the concerns of 47 IGs, (about 2/3 of them) who wrote to us in August about obstacles Obama Administration agencies have placed in their way.  To read about what we learned in the hearing, see this CNN piece or this Washington Post story.  You can watch video of the opening statements here.

NEW LEGISLATION

With the 2014 elections and the swearing in of new members, a new session of Congress begins.  Consequently, bills that did not pass the previous session of Congress must be reintroduced.  Over the past few weeks, I have reintroduced ten important bills.  Here are a few:

TAX EXEMPT PROFESSIONAL SPORTS LEAGUES

Professional sports leagues are not charities, but they are treated as such in the tax code.  Not only have I reintroduced legislation to remove tax exempt status from professional sports leagues, I am considering inviting NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to come explain to Congress why that exemption should exist.   You can read CNN’s story about the controversy here.  I spoke to Fox News Business about it here.

OTHER OVERSIGHT WORK

The Oversight Committee is in a target-rich environment with many investigations underway.  Although some are not ready for public dissemination, here are some developments from the past few  weeks:

Environment Protection Agency mismanagement and overregulation

Healthcare.gov Data Sharing

Jonathan Gruber subpoena for Obamacare documents

Secret Service hearing next weekCNN also wrote an extensive piece about our efforts to reform the Secret Service.
