Senator Richard Burr

Richard Burr, US Senator North Carolina This week, in my capacity as Senate Intelligence Chairman, I introduced a major piece of legislation: the *Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act [link 1]* (S.754).Co-sponsored with Vice Chairman Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), the bill creates additional incentives to increase sharing of cybersecurity threat information while protecting individual privacy and civil liberties interests and offering liability protection to the private sector. The *Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act *was approved by the Senate Intelligence Committee on a 14-1 vote last Thursday. Im proud of the Committees work and the quality of this bill. This legislation protects the privacy rights of Americans while also minimizing our vulnerability to cyber-attacks. Information sharing is purely voluntary and companies can only share cyber-threat information and the government may only use shared data for cybersecurity purposes. This legislation provides important liability protection for entities that share cyber threat information as provided in the bill. It further requires that both private and government entities remove personal information prior to sharing. These are protocols which will help minimize the threat to the United States and also ensure that our citizens are less likely to experience the same scale of attacks as weve seen in the Sony and Anthem attacks. Americans have unfortunately become all too familiar with the constant threat to their personal information from hackers.  As the recent attacks on Target, Anthem Blue Cross and Sony illustrate, cybersecurity threats come from both here and abroad, and Americans' most sensitive data is the target. Last week, I introduced a bipartisan bill aimed at addressing this threat: the (S.754).

The bill, which is coauthored with Senator Dianne Feinstein, would create additional incentives to increase sharing of threat information while making sure individual privacy is protected. The Cybersecurity Information Sharing Act was approved by the Senate Intelligence Committee on a 14-1 vote.

Im proud of the Committees work and the quality of this bill. Our goal is to minimize a growing threat to the United States and also ensure that our citizens' personal data remains private and secure.
