Bush Center Briefing: Volume 2 | Issue 5
[image: George W. Bush Presidential Center] The Bush Center Briefing Volume 2 | Issue 5 Explore More BUY ENGAGE TICKETS <forms.bushcenter.org/page.redir READ THE CATALYST <forms.bushcenter.org/page.redir UPCOMING EVENTS <forms.bushcenter.org/page.redir Letter from the CEO This fall, the George W. Bush Institute published three major reports that reflect the substantive work of our Domestic Excellence and Global Leadership Impact Centers. These policy papers also are tied to our mission of achieving results that improve the lives of Americans and people around the world. In early October, A Nation Built by Immigrants <forms.bushcenter.org/page.redir presented powerful stories of immigrants who are making America a more productive country. The report also debunked myths about immigrants’ role in our economy. And our Economic Growth Initiative team, led by Matthew Rooney and Laura Collins, outlined five recommendations for a pro-growth immigration plan. Two weeks later, as part of a major New York City forum featuring President and Mrs. George W. Bush, former Secretaries of State Condoleezza Rice and Madeleine Albright, and U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley, we released The Spirit of Liberty: At Home, In the World. <forms.bushcenter.org/page.redir The call-to-action paper by Bush Institute Human Freedom Initiative Fellows Peter Wehner and Thomas Melia affirms our values of freedom, while seeking to fortify the institutions that secure these values at home. The paper also aspires to help create a new consensus that America benefits from strengthening these values worldwide. Each week in November, we rolled out The A Word: Accountability — The Dirty Word of Today’s Education Reform. <forms.bushcenter.org/page.redir The A Word contains interviews with leading educators on improving schools through high academic standards and measuring the progress of every student in meeting them. Anne Wicks, the Bush Institute’s Education Reform Director, and William McKenzie, the Bush Institute’s Editorial Director, conducted the interviews this year, and we were honored that The 74 , a national news site devoted to covering education issues, published them simultaneously. We conclude our Engagement Agenda for 2017 with Bright and Beautiful at Home: Holiday Floral Workshop on Tuesday, December 12. Tickets are available <forms.bushcenter.org/page.redir for this session with former White House florist Bob Scanlan in which every participant will create and take home a holiday centerpiece. The event, connected to our holiday special exhibit, follows memorable Engage events this fall with Condoleezza Rice in October and Barbara Bush and Jenna Bush Hager in November. Our policy publications and our Engage series of renowned speakers and events both reflect our devotion to being relevant, timely, and results-oriented. May each of you enjoy the holiday season and the start of an exciting new year. We pledge to make a difference in our world in 2018. -- Ken Hersh , President and CEO of the George W. Bush Presidential Center In Focus Domestic Excellence A Nation Built by Immigrants Immigrants come from a variety of backgrounds and no two of their stories are alike. In a new Bush Institute report, our Economic Growth team introduces you to immigrants who are building America’s economy. The digital document, A Nation Built by Immigrants , debunks the myths about legal immigrants and offers practical, realistic ways to modernize America’s immigration system. Read the report here [image: arrow] <forms.bushcenter.org/page.redir Global Leadership The Spirit of Liberty: At Home, In The World Is democracy in decline, even danger? A Bush Institute paper <forms.bushcenter.org/page.redir takes on this question, concluding that Americans need to celebrate, protect, and extend the spirit of ordered liberty at home, and in the world. The forward-looking report by our Human Freedom Initiative team is the product of months of research, including roundtable discussions with top American leaders. The call-to-action paper includes specific suggestions to strengthen democratic institutions at home and abroad. Read the conclusions here [image: arrow] <forms.bushcenter.org/page.redir Domestic Excellence The A Word: Accountability—The Dirty Word of Today’s Education Reform Accountability simply means accepting responsibility for one’s actions. Accountability applied to schools, however, has become so polarizing that it is now the equivalent to a dirty word. To get beyond the soundbites, the Bush Institute’s education team engaged in conversations with education leaders around the nation to hear how they use accountability to help students learn and how they would refine the use of standards and testing to help students in the future. Read the interviews here [image: arrow] <forms.bushcenter.org/page.redir Engagement Agenda Engage: Bright and Beautiful at Home: Holiday Floral Workshop Our Engagement Agenda for 2017 concludes with Bright and Beautiful at Home: Holiday Floral Workshop on Tuesday, December 12. Employers depend upon innovative workers as well as a ready supply of talent. Without both of those factors, productivity declines and shackles the economy’s ability to expand. In this Bush Center Briefing, we address that economic challenge with recommendations from two George W. Bush Institute experts. They describe how modernizing the immigration system and capitalizing upon the new Forever GI Bill can expand America’s workforce. Laura Collins, deputy director of the Bush Institute’s Economic Reform initiative, details why Washington should focus immigration policies on skilled workers. And Jeffrey Cleland, a retired Marine corporal and manager of research and policy for the Bush Institute’s Military Service Initiative, describes how universities and employers can tap the talents of America’s returning servicemembers through the updated GI Bill. These recommendations add to our growing list of 2017 policy proposals aimed at addressing today’s most pressing challenges. Earlier this year, we presented Washington with a set of specific reforms from both our Domestic Excellence and Global Leadership Impact Centers. As is our mission, we speak to contemporary problems through the work of our Impact Centers and offer solutions to realize results. -- Ken Hersh , President and CEO of the George W. Bush Presidential Center In Focus Domestic Excellence Temporary Workers, Skilled Immigrants Could Grow the Workforce The U.S. economy faces a conundrum. Thousands of jobs remain open at the same time that the economy is running at full employment. Employers simply cannot find enough qualified workers. The long-term answer lies in education and training. In the short term, writes Laura Collins, deputy director of the Bush Institute’s Economic Growth Initiative, U.S. policies should turn to skilled immigrants and temporary workers to meet our labor force needs. Read more [image: arrow] <forms.bushcenter.org/page.redir Domestic Excellence Universities, Employers, and Veterans Should Use the Forever GI Bill The new legislation could be a boon for employers and universities seeking to tap the talents of members of the American military transitioning back into civilian life. Jeffrey Cleland, manager of research and policy for the Bush Institute’s Military Service Initiative, describes how to make the bill work for veterans seeking to enter the workforce through a four-year degree or technical training that leads to a skilled job.
