SHAME
A new message from your friends at People For the American Way. *********************** SIGN NOW: Condemn the Senate GOP's Vote to Gut Health Care for Millions of Americans>> act.pfaw.org/sign/shame-on-GOP-healthcare-vote/ Anne, Republicans in the Senate just voted to open debate on the repeal of the Affordable Care Act. Because of the tenacity of Mitch McConnell, and a combination of perhaps unprecedented extremism and political cowardice on the part of other Republican senators, Trumpcare lives. And millions of Americans are left wondering if the health care they depend on will be there next year. Please speak out now and denounce this vote by Republicans and let them know that you're still in this fight!>> act.pfaw.org/sign/shame-on-GOP-healthcare-vote/ We need to gird for a fight over every amendment ... every attack on Medicaid, attempt to defund Planned Parenthood, and effort to give a massive tax cut to the ultrawealthy by gutting the access to health care that is literally the difference between life and death for millions. Only TWO Republican senators voted against the motion to proceed. All the other so-called "moderates" who expressed some reservation about gutting health care for tens of millions -- Senators Portman, McCain, Heller -- caved under the pressure. Sen. Shelly Moore Capito of West Virginia was one of three Republican senators who last week said she opposed to a bill that would repeal the Affordable Care Act without any replacement plan, saying that she didn't come to Washington to "hurt people" ... but that's what she voted on today. We know that the specifics of the legislation and amendments that will be debated over the coming days are sure to be LOADED with provisions that hurt millions of people -- and hurt them severely. This is a shameful moment in history. Republicans have continued to sink to new lows with each passing fight on legislation, judicial and executive branch nominees, and holding Trump accountable. But today's end-run around any measure of civility and respect for the legislative process -- all to deny millions people health care -- is shocking even for them. Speak out now and CONDEMN Republicans for their vote to destroy health care!>> act.pfaw.org/sign/shame-on-GOP-healthcare-vote/ Thank you for all you do! More to come on how we will keep fighting against the GOP's odious attempts to repeal the Affordable Care Act. --Katie O’Connell, Digital Communications Coordinator donate: act.pfaw.org/donate/support-pfaw-today/ *********************** Do not reply directly to this e-mail. What we're made of
Friend -- Like you, I was devastated to see the Senate move forward with its heartless plan to repeal Obamacare last night. When I think about this debate, I don't think about whip counts or Washington. I think about one of my constituents, who I met a few weeks ago. Ted is a bricklayer from Fall River, Massachusetts. It's hard, proud work -- the kind that comes with frequent physical injury. He's no exception, and for years Ted took opioids to deal with the pain. He traveled the long, painful road to addiction ... and fought back. By force of will and faith, he pulled himself up. He got treatment. He got his life back together. But a few months ago, an injury cost him his job and health insurance. And a new diagnosis just came in: liver cancer. It's a bad break at the worst possible time -- the moment we all dread, a blow that could come to any one of us or someone we love. So here's what I'll say: This is where our system proves what it's made of. We must deliver. For Ted, and for every American in need of a little compassion and mercy. my.ofa.us/This-Is-Not-Over When our people are sick, or tired, or terrified, and have given everything they've got ... we do not abandon them. We pull them up. We bet on their resilience. Because there's nothing more fundamentally American than the belief that our people survive, endure, and rise to fight again. They deserve a government and health care system that will jump into the ring, right by their side. This is the ultimate test in our health care fight -- to create something as good and decent as the people we serve. We cannot fail. Stand with OFA, and help us deliver: my.ofa.us/This-Is-Not-Over Thank you, Congressman Joe Kennedy III

Sign this: Betsy DeVos’ head of civil rights thinks sexual assault survivors are lying
[ act.credoaction.com/sign/devos_titleix ]Betsy DeVos: Stand with survivors of sexual assault The petition to Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos reads: “The Department of Education must stand with survivors of campus sexual assault. Candice Jackson’s statement about sexual violence survivors perpetuates victim blaming and rape culture. Immediately fire Candice Jackson and publicly commit to protecting all students from discrimination, hate and violence by preserving and enforcing Title IX.” Add your name: [ act.credoaction.com/sign/devos_titleix ]Sign the petition ► Dear Anne, [ act.credoaction.com/sign/devos_titleix ][IMG] Under Betsy DeVos’ Department of Education (DOE), campus sexual assault survivors are on their own. DeVos recently met with misogynistic "men’s rights groups" and rape deniers about weakening Title IX protections for campus sexual assault survivors.^1 And that’s not all. DeVos has also appointed Candice Jackson – an anti-feminist activist who publicly doubts women who report sexual assault – as acting head of the DOE's Office for Civil Rights. This is beyond appalling.^2 We cannot remain silent while DeVos undermines policies that protect students from discrimination and violence, empowers rape deniers and appoints anti-feminist activists to run the DOE's investigations of schools that fail to properly handle reports of sexual assault. We must raise a massive public outcry to demand that DeVos do her job, immediately fire Candice Jackson and publicly commit to protecting all students from hate. [ act.credoaction.com/sign/devos_titleix ]Tell Betsy DeVos: Fire Candice Jackson and publicly commit to protecting all students from discrimination, hate and violence. Click here to sign the petition. DeVos has already refused to say whether she will stand up for LGBTQ students. Now it seems she is turning her back on sexual assault survivors as well. DeVos devoted one third of her summit on Title IX to "men’s rights groups." These groups elevate a false narrative that most sexual assault charges are false, promote victim-blaming, and attempt to harass and intimidate assault survivors to get them to drop their cases.^3 At around the same time of DeVos’ summit with "men’s rights groups," Jackson, the acting head of the DOE's Office for Civil Rights, told reporters from the New York Times that: “90 percent of sexual assault accusations fall into the category of, 'We were both drunk’, ‘we broke up, and six months later I found myself under a Title IX investigation because she just decided that our last sleeping together was not quite right.'”^4 This is not the first time Jackson has made such appalling statements. She is a long-time anti-feminist activist who has almost no experience with civil rights law. She once claimed she faced discrimination because she was white.^5 She has also made many victim-blaming statements over the years and has shown a deeply troubling skepticism of women who report sexual violence.^6 Jackson is completely unqualified to run the DOE's Office for Civil Rights. A top DOE official in charge of enforcing policies to protect students from discrimination and violence should never trivialize sexual assault or discourage students from reporting it. [ act.credoaction.com/sign/devos_titleix ]Tell Betsy DeVos: Fire Candice Jackson and publicly commit to protecting all students from discrimination, hate and violence. Click here to sign the petition. One in five women are sexually assaulted in college.^7 Schools are responsible for responding to student reports of sexual violence, but many universities have a terrible record of sweeping sexual assault cases under the rug to protect their bottom lines.^8 When schools do not do their jobs, many survivors end up suing educational institutions and must endure drawn out and sometimes humiliating investigations just to get basic accommodations like class schedule changes and mental health coverage.^9 In the face of this epidemic, the Obama administration issued a 2011 Dear Colleague Letter to clarify how Title IX, which mandates gender equality in education, should be used to fight campus sexual assault.^10 The guidance makes it easier for students to report sexual violence to their institution. It also requires schools and universities to handle reports quickly and fairly and provide accommodations for survivors so they do not face their assailants daily in their dorms and classrooms.^11,12 According to a recent Title IX DOE report, there are 344 open sexual violence investigations at 242 postsecondary schools on the books right now.^13 Title IX will only protect students from hate and violence if DeVos makes sure that schools enforce it. Speak out now to demand that she stand up for sexual assault survivors. Click the link below to sign the petition. We have to keep working - join tomorrow's health care briefing call
Friend -- Today, the Senate voted to proceed with debate on Obamacare opponents' disastrous repeal plan. Make no mistake: Repealing Obamacare would harm millions of Americans -- our friends, our family, our neighbors -- who rely on Medicaid, who were born with a pre-existing condition, or who are bravely battling cancer. Moving forward with a plan to take care away from those depending on Obamacare's protections isn't just irresponsible -- it's appalling. But this isn't over. OFA supporters and volunteers will continue fighting back against this law's repeal. And with Senate leaders rushing toward a final vote, we don't have much time. So tomorrow, Valerie Jarrett, former Senior Advisor and Director of the Office of Public Engagement during the Obama administration, will join us on a health care briefing call to discuss what we can do next. We'll go over how we can keep putting pressure on elected officials, and making sure they're acting in the interests of the people they were elected to represent. I hope you can join us -- here are the details for the call: Tomorrow, Wednesday July 26th 8pm ET RSVP now: myaccount.maestroconference.com/conference/register/EDDZ8PKRUVIT7FV6 Thanks, Jack Shapiro Director of Policy & Campaigns

This is not over
Friend -- After today's vote to proceed, the Senate has started official debate on Obamacare repeal. Here's what Mitch McConnell and other Senate leaders don't understand: Cancer doesn't have partisan leanings. Heart attacks and asthma don't target political parties. And all Americans, regardless of age or income or background, deserve access to affordable health care. Every senator working to rip health care away from millions of people must know: Our movement will never stop fighting. Join us: my.ofa.us/This-Is-Not-Over Thanks, Organizing for Action

Sign if you agree: Gap, Disney & Pepsi must stop funding climate deniers
[ act.credoaction.com/sign/quit_chamber ]Tell Gap, Disney & Pepsi: Stop funding anti-climate U.S. Chamber of Commerce The petition to Gap, Disney and Pepsi reads: "Your company acknowledges that climate change is a threat to the planet, yet your membership in the U.S. Chamber of Commerce helps fund an extreme, climate-denying agenda. Withdraw your membership and stop funding the Chamber of Commerce immediately." Add your name: [ act.credoaction.com/sign/quit_chamber ]Sign the petition ► Dear Anne, [ act.credoaction.com/sign/quit_chamber ][IMG] When Donald Trump backed out of the Paris climate agreement, it was no surprise that he cited a bogus anti-climate study funded by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, an extremist, right-wing lobby group in the pocket of Big Oil that regularly denies the science of climate change. What is surprising, though, are the companies that continue to fund the Chamber of Commerce, including Gap, Disney and Pepsi, in complete contradiction to these companies' own public stances in favor of the Paris accord and climate action. If Gap, Disney and Pepsi are truly committed to fighting runaway climate change, they must discontinue funding the Chamber's climate denial and end their membership immediately. [ act.credoaction.com/sign/quit_chamber ]Tell Gap, Disney and Pepsi: Stop funding the anti-climate U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Click here to sign the petition. As the nation's largest pro-business organization, the Chamber of Commerce spends more on lobbying than any other group by far. Over the last 18 years, it spent $1.2 billion in lobbying, with $104 million in just the last year.^1,2 The Chamber uses its massive clout and war chest to fund Big Tobacco and oil and gas interests and prop up climate change deniers in Congress and across the country. In fact, 94 percent of the Chamber's political donations went to climate-denying candidates in the 2010 midterm elections.^3 Over the last few years, dozens of major companies, including Starbucks, Unilever, Costco and General Mills, have dropped the Chamber because of its extreme views on climate change and its right-wing political spending. Yet Gap, Disney and Pepsi have remained members despite their vocal support of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Disney CEO Robert Iger even quit Trump’s advisory council over the decision to withdraw from the Paris agreement, even though his company continues funding the Chamber's climate-denying agenda.^4 While these three companies pay lip service to combating climate change and promote their green corporate images, it's time for them to put their money where their mouths are. We must ramp up public pressure to demand these companies do the right thing for the planet and leave the Chamber of Commerce once and for all. Save lives. Save Obamacare.
Friend -- In just a few hours, the Senate will vote on a "motion to proceed" with debate on Mitch McConnell's dangerous Obamacare repeal. If it passes -- which could very well happen -- the Senate will begin a mere 20 hours of "discussion" before deciding the fate of health care for millions. It's the bare minimum amount of time, to the minute, required by Senate procedure. No one knows which bill they plan to debate --- we may not have even seen it yet. But it will impact one sixth of our economy, end Medicaid as we know it, and could rip health care away from at least 22 million people. And that's just the beginning. Friend, the time to act is now. One minute of your time today will help save health care for millions of Americans. Add your voice to the chorus of people speaking out against repeal. Send a message to a key senator today with just two clicks. Tweet: twitter.com/intent/tweet Thanks, Organizing for Action

Right-wing 'Crosscheck' program wrong 99% of time. GOP wants to make it national!
A new message from your friends at PFAW Foundation. Anne, Reminder: Our deadline is TODAY to raise the $25K we need to complete the cost of the full-page New York Times ad we want to run exposing Trump's voter suppression commission. We're more than halfway there, but we still need to raise another $11,000 before midnight. (Remember -- the major donor who will chip in $30K towards the effort will put up the money if we can raise our end from PFAW Foundation supporters like you.) Will you chip in a tax-deductible donation now to help us run the ad? site.pfaw.org/site/R Getting the word out about this commission's attack on our right to vote is urgent. Last night, Washington Post reporter Christopher Ingraham published a piece on the Post's blog titled, "This anti-voter-fraud program gets it wrong over 99 percent of the time. The GOP wants to take it nationwide." That's a reference to a program that seems to be a key focus of Trump's so-called 'Election Integrity Commission' -- a program that PFAW's Right Wing Watch has covered extensively, developed by commission co-chair (and perhaps the nation's #1 leading vote suppressor) Kris Kobach. "The program, known as the Interstate Crosscheck System, has been plagued by data quality issues. Three states have recently left it, citing accuracy issues. "But Kobach, who also serves as Kansas's secretary of state and is running for governor in 2018, remains undeterred. In his opening remarks before the election commission he said the Crosscheck program 'illustrates how a successful multistate effort can be in enhancing the integrity of our elections and in keeping our voter rolls accurate. I'm confident that this commission will be equally successful on the national level.'" Translation: the commission plans to encourage and work with states on massive voter roll purges that scrub eligible voters from the rolls. "In theory, the program is supposed to detect possible cases of people voting in multiple locations. But academics and states that use the program have found that its results are overrun with false positives, creating a high risk of disenfranchising legal voters. A statistical analysis of the program published earlier this year by researchers at Stanford, Harvard, University of Pennsylvania and Microsoft, for instance, found that Crosscheck 'would eliminate about 200 registrations used to cast legitimate votes for every one registration used to cast a double vote.'" This voter suppression commission must be stopped -- and we're going to buy a full-page NY Times ad to help expose the truth behind it. But we can only fund it if enough PFAW Foundation supporters chip in before midnight tonight. Please chip in what you can now! Your gift to PFAW Foundation will be tax-deductible>> site.pfaw.org/site/R Thanks for everything you do. -- Michael Previous message below: Anne, We're hoping to run a full-page ad in the New York Times as early as THIS SUNDAY to expose Trump's sham 'Election Integrity Commission' and the right-wing vote suppressors who are on it. The price tag is $55,000, and we have a major donor who will put up more than half of it -- $30,000 -- if we can raise the other $25,000 from supporters like you before our deadline at midnight tomorrow! This is a BIG match opportunity -- and a big opportunity for PFAW Foundation supporters to make an impact against the Right's war on voting -- but we HAVE TO hit our goal, because it's all or nothing. Will you rush an urgent donation to help us run the ad before our deadline? site.pfaw.org/site/R To sweeten the deal, gifts to PFAW Foundation are tax-deductible! Trump has made outrageous (and completely false) claims about 3-5 million people voting illegally in 2016, to justify his loss of the popular vote, and trying to create 'evidence' for that unprovable fiction was his motivation in forming this commission. But in trying to prop up the myth of rampant illegal voting, the commission's underlying purpose is to lay the groundwork for a new wave of voter suppression nationwide, via voter roll purges and policies that put barriers between eligible voters and the ballot box. We know this because of who is on the commission -- the same people we'll be exposing in our ad if we can make our goal. site.pfaw.org/site/R Kris Kobach: Co-chair of the commission, Kansas Secretary of State, and perhaps the chief architect of the Right's coordinated attack on voting rights. He has been repeatedly sued for making it harder for Kansans to vote. In 2016 he illegally blocked tens of thousands of eligible voters from registering. He repeatedly pushed the racist conspiracy theory that President Obama was born in Kenya. In 2015, Kobach said that it was possible that the Obama administration might ban all prosecutions of African Americans. Hans von Spakovsky: As an attorney in George W. Bush's Justice Department, von Spakovsky gave the green light to a restrictive voter ID program in Georgia against the advice of career DOJ attorneys -- at the same time he published an op-ed under a pseudonym supporting ID requirements. Since then he's worked at the far-right Heritage Foundation, whose president openly admitted that his group was working to impose voter ID requirements across the country in order to elect "more conservative candidates." J. Christian Adams: Former Bush Department of Justice Attorney and a longtime critic of the Voting Rights Act. Adams claimed that under President Obama, the Justice Department's Voting Rights Division didn't spend enough time protecting white voters. Ken Blackwell: Former Ohio Secretary of State and current senior fellow at the Radical Right hate group Family Research Council. In 2004 Blackwell became notorious for his efforts to hinder minority voter registration in Ohio in an effort to support the reelection of President George W. Bush. He's one of the few current or former election officials to echo Donald Trump's baseless claims of widespread illegal voting in the 2016 elections. Help us expose Trump's voter suppression commission in the New York Times with an urgent tax-deductible donation right now>> site.pfaw.org/site/R THANK YOU for everything you do!
